Stalevo (Carbidopa Levodopa Entacapone)

What is Generic Stalevo?

Stalevo is a medication which contains three active ingredients. Levodopa is antiparkinsonian ingredient. Carbidopa and Entacapone improve and enhance the antiparkinsonian effects of first one. Clinically proven efficacy of Stalevo and that it allows patients to be more active throughout the day.

Levodopa passes through the blood-brain barrier and alleviates Parkinson's symptoms and its increasing number reaches the brain.

Entacapone is a peripheral-acting and it was designed for the reception together with Levodopa.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take Generic Stalevo?

Since Stalevo contains Levodopa, it should be prescribed with caution to if you suffer from: severe cardiovascular or pulmonary disorders, asthma, angle-closure glaucoma, kidney, liver, or endocrine glands disease, gastric or duodenal ulcers or a history of seizures.

Inform your doctor if you have intolerance to active ingredients or any component of the drug or any allergies. The drug cannot be used by children. Your doctor should know about every medication that you currently take to avoid dangerous reactions.

How should I take Stalevo?

Take a whole pill between meals or with meal if you have bowel problems, don’t chew it or break.

Patients should be warned about taking only one dose of Stalevo at once. Those who take less than 70-100 mg of Carbidopa a day can feel nausea and vomiting.

If you need a smaller or bigger dose of the drug then you should change a frequency of consumption. The maximal dose of Stalevo in one day is 10 pills.

Dosage information

The drug is presented in a tablet form. Proportions of Levodopa, Carbidopa and Entacapone in one pill are 100 + 25 200 mgs.

What may interact with Stalevo?

However, there wasn’t observed interaction between it and Carbidopa. During studying was not observed any interaction between Entacapone and Selegiline in patients.

Antihypertensive drugs: if a patient is already taking antihypertensive medication adding of Levodopa may develop symptomatic orthostatic hypotension. In that case you need to change the dose of your antihypertensive medication.

Patients sometimes noticed unwanted effects during combination with tricyclic antidepressants.

What should I watch for while taking Stalevo?

This drug wouldn't be safe if to treat extrapyramidal symptoms because of its ingredients.

Safety and efficacy of taking Stalevo by persons under 18 was not clinically confirmed.

You should be warned that the results of some tests can have false results (e.g. urinal).

Consumption of those three ingredients can cause somnolence so try to avoid driving and controlling mechanisms until you will be sure that you can perform those safely.

Inform your doctor about pregnancy or planning to conceive a baby; the drug Stalevo is not prescribed to pregnant women because of it is not studied whether it can harm the baby.

What side effects may I notice from Generic Stalevo?

Undesirable effects that often occur as a result of taking this drug are those associated with central neurological activity of dopamine. These reactions can be controlled by decreasing doses. The most frequently occurring adverse effects are nausea, dyskinesia, including dystonia. Muscle movements and blepharospasm may be initial signs to reduce the dose.

Other undesirable effect is psychological changes.

Less frequent undesirable effects of this therapy are arrhythmia, palpitations, orthostatic hypotension, “on-off” phenomenon, anorexia.

Usually side effects caused by Entacapone occur in most cases at the beginning of treatment.
